If you're on the Medicare plan, you should be receiving health care coverage as well as prescription coverage at a highly discounted rate. Depending on your situation, however, there may be some things that are not covered. Fortunately, there are Medicare supplement plans that have been designed to help “fill in the gaps” where regular Medicare may have left off, or neglected to cover. There are generally 12 different Medicare supplement plans, known as Medigap policies, and they are labeled from the letters A to L. These supplemental plans are all sold by most insurance companies, but each plan has a different cost. The cost can also vary depending on which insurance company you choose, so be sure to do a little bit of shopping around before making a final decision. It is also important to know that Medicare supplement plans only cover individuals, so if you want supplemental insurance for your space, two separate plans must be purchased. Some insurance carriers may offer discounts for more than one person, but ask around just to be sure before you choose. There are 12 different programs available because everyone's situation varies depending on their coverage from Medicare as well as their own personal needs. No matter which you choose, remember that these plans are made to help enhance your current coverage, not replace it completely. You can also choose to combine as little or as many of the supplemental plans as you wish, depending on your needs and on what you can afford. When choosing Medicare supplement plans, talk to your insurance broker or agent first. They can usually go over your paperwork with you and help you come up with a plan that will be both beneficial and cost effective. These plans can cover a wide variety of different health care needs, such as drug types or brands that may not be covered by Medicare, nursing facility stays, in home hospice care, blood, wheelchairs, and many other things that you may need over your lifetime that traditional Medicare might not cover. By purchasing Medicare supplement plans based on your own needs, you could save yourself and your family a lot of costly health related expenses each year. You can always also adjust your plan to what you may need in the future as the years go by. In most cases, you and/or your spouse must be 65 years of age or older to qualify for both Medicare, and for the Medicare supplement plans. Some things such as what is available vary from state to state, so be sure you know which items apply to you in your particular state of residence. Things like hearing exams and hearing aids, dental care, and vision care are also included in many of the Medicare supplement plans which can be especially helpful as we age. The best thing to do is be sure you perform your own research and then bring that knowledge to someone you know and trust. If you've had a long relationship with your insurance broker or agent, he or she may be the best source of advice when it comes to making the right choice for the different Medicare supplement plans. |
