Medical Travel InsuranceMedical travel insurance is insurance that covers you in the event you are traveling and become sick or injured to the point of requiring medical attention. Medical travel insurance typically applies to traveling outside of your home country, however there are circumstances where it could be required domestically. If you have an existing medical insurance policy and a homeowner’s insurance policy, it is entirely possible that you already have all the coverage you need. There are ways to obtain medical travel insurance easily if you do not have any or enough existing coverage. If you are planning a trip out of the country, check your existing medical insurance policy. Many times there are provisions in your existing policy that covers you while you are traveling. Similarly, some homeowner’s insurance policies have bizarre coverages that you might not be aware of, yet would come in handy when you travel. If after exhausting both sources, you find you do not have medical travel insurance provisions in any of your policies, you can purchase medical travel insurance. When people travel, they are generally traveling for one of two reasons – personal or business. If you are traveling for business, odds are your employer somehow is providing you with medical travel insurance. If not through your health care plan, then through a policy of theirs. Check with your employer before your departure. If you are traveling for pleasure and you don’t have coverage, you can obtain it one of two basic ways. Purchasing trip insurance through your travel agent is one way to obtain medical travel insurance. Trip insurance covers many different situations, but usually includes some type of medical insurance provision. It will cover specific medical expenses from the date of your departure to the date of your return. If you aren’t sure what you need, ask your travel agent. You can also purchase medical travel insurance from an insurance agent. Again, the coverage is limited to a specific time frame based on information you provide when purchasing the policy. Medical travel insurance is a short-term policy that should be fairly inexpensive to purchase. Certain circumstances, such as current health status and age, will have some bearing on the cost and coverage, but most people are able to obtain the coverage easily. Remember that it is important to check all existing insurance policies before you purchase additional medical travel insurance. If you have the coverage in an existing policy, you will only be over-insuring yourself by purchasing additional coverage. If you are uncertain what coverage you might have, call your plan administrator or your insurance agent to verify. When possible, make sure to look into medical travel insurance several weeks before your trip. If your trip is unexpected, trip insurance may be the quickest way to obtain coverage. |
