Ingrowing Toe Nails | |
Ingrowing toe nail affects the big toe and occurs when the side of the nail grows into a spike which digs in under the skin fold. Ingrowing toe nail occurs generally on the outer side of the toe nail. It occurs because the nail is not cut straight across. You can shape and form your finger nails to your hearts content but should always cut your toe nails straight across so that the corners of the cut are visible and have not been encouraged to dig under the skin fold or pulp. Tight shoes, stockings and socks can all contribute to the problem by pressing on the nail and the skin at the edge. Once established, particularly with associated bacterial infection, then it is necessary to consult a surgeon who can cure the condition with surgery. Before this may be necessary the situation might be saved by daily pushing back with the thumb the overhanging nail fold. The intention is to encourage the point of the nail to grow up and away from under the skin fold exposing the corner of the nail which can be packed with a wisp of gauze soaked in antiseptic. |
