PLASTIC SURGERY

Ears and Nose

-It is important to realise that plastic surgery is a specialised form of surgery and needs the expertise of a surgeon trained in this field. Your doctor will advise you of the need for plastic surgery and will refer you to an experienced colleague.

Plastic surgery on the ears can be carried out to create an ear if it is necessary or to change the shape and size of the ears.

Reconstruction of the ear is a multi-stage procedure and is usually commenced about the age of 6 using cartilage from ribs or the other non-affected ear. Sometimes the normal ear is modified to provide for symmetry.

Lesser deformities such as large prominent or deformed ears can also be corrected. Permanent sutures to pin back protruding ears, partial removal of cartilage and resection of skin all can help to restore the ear to a normal shape. In the case of severe deformities which can occur more often in the male than the female, the middle ear is often involved and hearing may also be affected.

Conditions such as extensive destruction of ear tissue by a skin cancer or by trauma due to a car accident or body contact sport, can be treated to varying degrees by plastic surgery.

The nose being such a prominent feature can also be involved in the need for extensive plastic surgery.

Skin cancers, fractures and skin lacerations due to accidents all might need plastic surgery. Nasal fractures need urgent attention as they may become fixed in a displaced position. In some people the psychological effect of an abnormal shaped nose may be justification for plastic surgery involving bone and cartilage.

Nasal obstruction caused by deviation of the nasal septum can be corrected by plastic surgery. The obstruction can be congenital or due to trauma, especially contact sports such as boxing and football. In the case of a footballer, it is wise to wait until the end of his career before undergoing plastic surgery on the nose or ears.
