Breast reconstructions are carried out on many women who have had a mastectomy and in those women who want to change the size and shape of their breasts. Any woman who wants to have plastic surgery on her breasts, regardless of the circumstances, must be referred to a specialist plastic surgeon. Not all mastectomy patients are suitable for breast reconstruction. Each case must be judged on its merits. It is felt, however, that breast reconstruction where possible improves the quality of life because it lessens disfigurement and negates the need to use a prosthesis. Reduction surgery on the breasts involves removing much of the fatty tissue that controls breast size, and relocating the areola or nipple. It is not uncommon for a woman with large breasts to experience severe discomfort due to size and want to do something to alleviate this discomfort. A breast reduction alleviates the weight and pressure associated with large breasts. Most women who undergo this operation are satisfied and appreciate the results. This operation is done under general anaesthesia and hospitalisation is necessary. Complications to any breast surgery can include bleeding, infection , asymmetry of breasts and scarring. Sometimes when the nipple is transplanted the surrounding tissue can reject the nipple. In the extreme, this can lead to loss of the nipple. Surgery to enlarge the breasts, or augmentation surgery, involves the implant of a silicone bag beneath the breast tissue. The result is generally very good, although complications of breast enlargement can include scar tissue, bruising, infection, exposure of the implant, deflation of the implant or asymmetry of the breasts. Function of the breasts and sensation does not alter with breast augmentation . In the case of sagging breasts, an operation to lift breast tissue can be performed which is usually simple, but as with any breast surgery, complications can occur. |
