NERVOUS SYSTEM

Known Causes of Seizures

Seizures have different known causes. Because seizures are often associated with epilepsy, persons who experience a random seizure are usually tested for the disorder. In many cases, epilepsy does not cause seizures. Various factors and illnesses can bring on a seizure. Seizures occur when the brain releases a burst of various signals simultaneously. This causes the body to shake uncontrollably. Sufferers may also experience convulsions or pass out. The seriousness of seizures differs. The episode can last a few seconds or a few minutes. Regardless, it is important for physicians to determine a cause. Treating the underlying condition that caused the seizure could prevent future seizures. Consider the following known causes of seizures.

Known causes of seizures in children include the rapid onset of a high fever. Some children suffer from a condition in which their body temperature rises four or five degrees within seconds. These seizures are called febrile seizures. Although frightening to parents and observers, these seizures are harmless. Children of all ages can be affected. However, this condition commonly affects toddlers.

Other known causes of seizures include injuries that affect the brain. Head traumas or concussions are usually minor injuries. However, if the fall is followed by a seizure, seek medical attention immediately. Infections such as meningitis can also lead to a seizure. Meningitis is extremely dangerous illness that requires medical care. Sometimes, the first symptom of the illness is a seizure. For this reasons, persons who suffer a seizure unexpectedly are examined for this deadly illness.

Uncommon or rare known causes of seizures include allergic reaction to medications, exposure to toxins, brain tumors, and neurological disorders. When seizures occur repeatedly, and appear to have no known cause and are not related to a high fever, physicians typically diagnose the patient as an epileptic. At this time, patients are prescribed medications to control seizures.
