Diseases of the Nervous System

Various diseases affect the nervous system. Unfortunately, when a person develops one of the many diseases of the nervous system, certain parts of their body are greatly affected. The nervous system plays a huge role in the bodies function. By means of the nervous system, muscles can respond to actions, organs work properly, and the body can feel sensations. When problems develop in the nervous system, there is an interruption of the body's function. For example, if a person develops Alzheimer's disease, the brain shows signs of shrinkage. While memory loss is common with advanced age, persons with Alzheimer's disease experiences severe memory loss. Symptoms typically include difficulty completing everyday tasks, and sufferers may forget little things such as brushing one's teeth or tying a shoelace. Additionally, diseases of the nervous system that affect the brain like Alzheimer's disease can cause disorientation, lack of good judgment, personality change, and change in mood.

Other common diseases of the nervous system include multiple sclerosis. This chronic disease affects more women than men, and can present itself in any part of the body. Neurons make is possible for the brain to control activity within the body. Because multiple sclerosis interferes with the transfer of neurons throughout the body, sufferers may experience difficulty walking, unusual sensations in the arms or legs, visual disturbances such as loss of vision, blurry vision, or double vision.

Unfortunately, diseases of the nervous system are incurable. Nonetheless, there are several medications available to ease discomfort and lessen symptoms. In many instances, sufferers may enter a remission period. Additional diseases of the nervous symptom include Tourette Syndrome and Parkinson's Disease. Characteristics of both diseases include uncontrollable body movements or body shakes. Symptoms develop gradually over time, and tend to intensify when nervous. Tourette and Parkinson sufferers may benefit from prescription medications purposed to reduce involuntary ticks and movement.
