Pre Menstrual Tension/Syndrome (PMS) | |
| Premenstrual tension appears in the week preceding a menstrual period and is accompanied by a build up in body fluid which can increase your weight by up to three or four kilograms. Breasts may also increase in size. Symptoms of premenstrual tensions can include either marked anxiety or depression sometimes associated with a feeling of inadequacy. There can be a lack of concentration. Gastrointestinal symptoms may be present including constipation or diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting and changes in appetite. Aggressiveness leading up to violent behaviour may occur. Once the period starts, most, if not all of the symptoms disappear as does the build-up of body fluid. the condition appears to affect up to 50% of women to varying degrees between the ages of 30 to 40. Most women cope with minor degrees of premenstrual tension. However, severe cases may need treatment. If so, your doctor will be able to advise on treatment which may include fluid tablets and hormones. |
