| Manic depression is a condition when the normal mood variations which occur in a person’s life ranging from happiness to sadness undergo extreme swings from manic behavior to severe depression. The cause in not known but it may be an inherited condition aggravated by environmental stresses. The symtpoms of depression correspond to the feeling of complete hopelessness which characterises a true depressive state. There is loss of interest in almot all normal activities and pastimes. There is increased weariness, loss of appetite, disturbed sleeping pattern with early awakening. In the depths of depression suicide is often contemplated. Within a matter of days to weeks the manic phase takes over with signs of extreme irritation, easy distractability, delusions of grandeur. There is physical restlessness leading to aggression which might find its outlet in acts of violence. There is a decreased need for sleep, minor excesses might include buying. |
