Normal Heart Rate

Normal heart rate is a concern for those who are watching their heart health and for those who want to get the most out of their fitness routines. Normal heart rate varies with age and physical condition and gets slower as one gets older. There are various ways to measure the pulse to see whether one has a normal heart rate. The simplest method is to put the index and middle finger on your carotid artery which is located on the neck. Count the number of beats for six seconds and multiply the number by 10. A slower method is to count the actual beats for 60 seconds. This is your pulse at rest, unless you take it while walking or running. It is, of course, quite difficult to find your normal heart rate this way while jogging, so heart monitors were created to monitor normal heart rate during exercise.

There is not one normal heart rate, but several normal heart rates. There is the normal heart rate at rest and the maximum heart rate. The maximum heart rate can be found by subtracting one's age from 220 or 226 for women. When beginning an exercise routine, it is a good idea to being at a rate which is 50% your maximum heart rate and to build up to 80%. One should not exercise at 90% of one's maximum heart rate unless directed to do so by a physician. Olympic athletes may be able to workout at close to a maximum heart rate, but it is not for a someone in average physical condition.

It is very useful to monitor your pulse to find your normal heart rate. It can be used as a form of stress or anger management to see if your moods and lifestyle are putting undue pressure on your heart. Anger and stress raises the heart above its normal heart rate, but does not provide the same benefit of exercise, since it does not bring more oxygen to the blood. Therefore, it is important to try to maintain your normal heart rate in everyday circumstances.

There are many types of monitors you can use to find your normal heart rate. The most popular kind is a patch that can be placed on the chest. This kind is used by doctors when trying to find normal heart rate, and requires machinery. Many of these types of heart monitors will also tell you how many calories are burned in a workout. However, these heart monitors are not convenient for outdoor exercise, but must be used with equipment. The advantage of these heart monitors is that they continuously measure the heart rate.

Another type of heart monitor can be worn like a wristwatch and can be used while jogging. You place your fingers on a pad and the device will give you a reading of your heart rate. You can find your normal heart rate while resting, exercising or at work. However, you can only get a reading when you put your fingers on the sensors.
